Elementary aged children have the ability to reason which is unsurpassed at any age.
They begin to ask how and why. The combined power of reasoning, intellect and imagination are so potent that virtually any concept or system; no matter how abstract, can be presented in such a way that they begin integrating knowledge of the universe from all directions through all disciplines. The Elementary Teacher ia a guide who opens the doors to the whole fields of study, igniting and then fanning the flame of interest in each student. The Elementary Classroom is designed to encourage children to wonder and explore. Materials are uniquely presented in a Montessori classroom. Much of the activity at the elementary level takes place in groups, with children sharing, collaborating and passionately exploring material together. They achieve this not only through the hands-on material, but also through the computer and research library.
Each child keeps a progress journal. They record in it their discoveries and further ways to challenge themselves. Instead of grades, the teacher provides a qualitative evaluation of each child's development.
